The Men Who Came to America and Needed Their Help

Sacagawea

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are best known for their countless expeditions in America. The Corps of Discovery Expedition was President Thomas Jefferson’s vision to explore the American West. It began May 1804 and ended in September 1806. Lewis was Jefferson’s private presidential secretary and served in the military where he met Clark. Lewis served a short term as Governor of the Territory of Upper Louisiana after the expedition and before he died. Clark lived many more years and also had many government positions, including Superintendent of Indian Affairs and Governor of the Missouri Territory.

William Clark

The Lewis and Clark Expedition (a.ka. the Corps of Discovery Expedition) was the first American expedition to cross the western portion of the United States. It began May, 1804 from St. Louis on the Mississippi River and went westward through the continental divide to the Pacific coast.

The expedition was commissioned shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and carried a select group of U.S. Army volunteers under the guidance of Captain Meriwether Lewis and his close friend Second Lieutenant William Clark. The primary objective of this journey was to explore and map the new territory, find an accessible route across the Western half of the continent, and create an American presence in this territory before Britain and other European explorers tried to claim it.

“[Sacagawea] recognizes the country and assures us that … the three forks are at no great distance. This piece of information has cheered the spirits of the party.”

The expedition’s second objective was scientific and economic. They were to study the area’s plants, animal life, and geography to create trade with the local Indian tribes. They ended the expedition with maps, sketches, and journals in St. Louis to report their findings to President Jefferson.

Pocahontas

John Smith

European Friendship Sites

Pocahontas is very famously connected to Captain John Smith, an English colonist, who set foot in Virginia with about a hundred other settlers in April 1607. The settlers built a fort on a marshy peninsula sticking out into the James River. These settlers had countless interactions over the next couple months with the Native Americans of Tsenacommacah, some were friendly and others were hostile. While exploring on the Chickahominy River in December 1607, Smith was taken by a hunting party led by the younger brother of Powhatan, Opechancanough. They brought Smith to Powhatan’s capital at Werowocomoco. In his 1608 account, Smith did not mention Pocahontas in his capture. He actually does not meet her for the first time until a couple months later. In 1616, however, Smith wrote a letter to Queen Anne in excitement of Pocahontas’s visit to England. He wrote about his capture along with the threat of his death, Pocahontas risked her own life save John Smith and almost had her own brains beaten out.

It is known that Pocahontas did befriend Smith as well as the Jamestown colony. She would go to the settlement and play games with the boys numerous times. When the colonists were at starving points, Pocahontas and her attendants brought Smith so much food and saved their lives many times where as they would have starved to death. Conflicts came up again when the colonists expanded their settlement further and the Powhatan felt their lands were threatened.

John Rolfe & Pocahontas

Pocahontas met John Rolfe during her stay in Henricus. Rolfe’s first wife, Sarah Hacker, and child, Bermuda Rolfe, died before his journey to Virginia. He had successfully grown a new type of tobacco there and stayed there a lot tending his crop. He was a righteous man who strained over the possible moral repercussions of marrying a barbarian. He wrote a long letter to the governor asking permission to marry her and expressed his love for her and believed that he would be saving her soul.

It’s unsure about Pocahontas’ feelings for Rolfe, however, she married him on April 5, 1614. Unfortunately, there is no known record indicating where the ceremony took place (possible sites include Henricus, Bermuda City, and Jamestown). They lived on Rolfe’s plantation, Varina Farms, for two years. It was located across the James River from the new community of Henricus. They had a son named Thomas born on January 30, 1615. Their marriage created an era of peace between the Jamestown colonists and Powhatan’s tribes for 8 years.
